Endodontic Treatment

Relieve your symptoms today with our endodontic treatment.

At Spinney Brook Dental, we offer patients endodontic treatment commonly called as root canal treatment (RCT) to relieve them of  symptoms such as pain and swelling caused by root infections.

It’s important to understand the basics of endodontic therapy before we go any further. Inside the tooth, under the white enamel and a hard layer known as the dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue and forms the tooth’s surrounding hard tissues during development.

The pulp is the innermost layer of a tooth, extending from the crown to the tip of the roots. This tissue is important for a tooth’s growth and development, but once a tooth is fully mature it can survive without the pulp. The tooth will continue to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it.

When is Endodontic Treatment Necessary?

When the pulp, the soft tissue inside a root canal, becomes inflamed or infected, endodontic therapy is required. The inflammation or infection can develop for a variety of reasons:

Consequently, a tooth injury might cause pulp harm even if the tooth appears undamaged.
Left untreated, inflammation or infection of the pulp can be painful or lead to an abscess.

Signs That Endodontic Treatment May Be Necessary

If you experience any pain, gum or bone tissue tenderness, prolonged cold or heat sensitivity, notice a change in tooth colour or have swelling and drainage in the lymph nodes then please contact your dentist immediately as these could be warning signs of an abscess.

How Endodontic Treatment Can Save The Tooth

The dentist removes the infected or inflamed pulp, cleans and shapes the inside of the root canal, then fills and seals the space. You will return to your dentist afterwards for a crown or other restoration on the tooth to protect it and restore its full function.
After we’ve taken these steps, the tooth continues to function like any regular tooth would.

Will The Patient Feel Pain Through The Endodontic Treatment?

Many endodontic procedures are performed to relieve pain from toothaches caused by pulp inflammation or infection. With modern techniques and anesthetics, most patients report that they feel comfortable during the procedure.
The tooth may be sensitive for the first few days after treatment, especially if there was discomfort or infection before the procedure. Over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers can help with this discomfort. The patient should follow the dentist’s instructions to the letter.
After your endodontic treatment, it is not unusual for the tooth to feel different from the other teeth. However, if you experience severe pain or pressure that lasts more than a few days, please call the dentist.

Does The Tooth Need Special Care After The Treatment?

The patient should avoid chewing or biting on the treated tooth until their dentist has had a chance to fully restore it. The unrestored tooth is susceptible to fracture, and should be seen by a dental professional for repair as soon as possible.
It’s also important that the patient practice good oral hygiene habits such as brushing, flossing, and routine exams and cleanings.

Endodontic treatment is used to cure infections or abnormalities in the dental nerve or soft tissue within a tooth.
